For some years now, I have been living with wasps. Yes it is true.
I let an entire colony of wasps build their home in a bug hotel on my fence and interesting things happened.
I originally put up the bug hotel for Mason Bees and butterflies, instead I got jumping spiders and wasps.
I would walk up to the nest almost everyday, planting and picking peas and cucumbers. We had a storm one night and it blew the house a bit crooked and they let me fix it without problems.
Their extremely calm behavior surprised me and pushed me to do some research on what they can do.
What do they do?
Wasps are predators, they eat other bugs and plants. They are also pollinators and aided my fruiting plants when bees where nowhere to be found.
From observing them in my garden I saw them eat beetles, caterpillars and other crop eating bugs.
The wasps fixed the lack of pollination and imbalance of pests in my garden and it began to thrive.
Now to be honest, I was nervous when I saw the wasps moving into the hotel and I definitely had planed to remove them.
We ended up living with that colony for two years and in return other wasps stopped building nests on our home every two days, pests in the garden decreased, and that entire time no one was ever stung.
Fun Fact
Wasps are territorial, if there is a large enough colony in one area others will move on.
Conclusion
I know it sounds crazy, but when I gave them a chance it seemed to me that there was a feeling of peace. Over time my family began to see it too.
To this day I don’t know how coexistence with wasps and humans worked in peace, but it taught me so many lessons.
Summing it up, wasps are amazing, mindful creatures who help us with more than we know.
